The following is an excerpt from the America Speaks V.P. of Citizen Engagement - about the people involved and purpose...

"members of a local tea party will be sitting down and actually talking with people from MoveOn. They may be disagreeing, but they will be at a table talking to each other for the first time. A broadcast will be linking together 19 sites, each of which is polling together and submitting ideas to a theme team, in a way that has never quite been done before in this configuration. In more than 40 other sites, people will be joining the process in Community Conversations.  Hundreds of facilitators and thousands of participants will be experiencing the AmericaSpeaks process for the first time. While it may not match spot-on the exact demographics of the country, it will be the largest, most diverse group that has ever come together on this issue. And media all across the country will be watching this odd thing take place in which the public actually has a constructive discussion about policy. All the mistakes that we made and stresses we encountered will be done. And we'll just be organizing an unprecedented national discussion that no one has ever done before."

The League of Women Voters of Philadelphia

The League of Women Voters, a non-partisan and non-profit organization, works at all levels of American government acting on behalf of particular legislation and providing balanced information about all candidates for political office. The organization's name, like its mission, derives from the proud legacy of the women's suffrage movement. Today's members are women and men; any citizen aged 18 or older can join.
